Research brief
Skate Cut
Trim a song to a figure-skating program length so the cuts land on the beat and the phrase, and it still sounds like music.
At a glance
- What it does
- Pick a program length, remove middle sections to fit, and snap the cuts to the beat and the phrase. Crossfades. The real ending stays.
- Status
- Feasibility Spike Internal prototype only. There is no way to try it.
- How to get it
- There is no app, no download, and no waitlist.
How a cut works
- Choose a level. A juvenile free skate, for example, is 2 minutes 30 seconds, give or take 10 seconds.
- The prototype takes out middle sections until the length fits, snaps each cut to the beat and the phrase, crossfades, and keeps the real ending.
- A coach can mark a rough section. The prototype snaps that mark and reports whether the length fits. That is a capability of the prototype, not a claim that coaches have tested it.
What the spike has shown
- Program lengths follow the 2026-27 USFS rulebook, rules 6050 through 6052. Using the rulebook for timings is not an affiliation, and it is not an endorsement.
- On an automated check of public-domain classical music, acceptable cuts went from 50% in the first version to 83% in the third (15 of 18, against an 80% bar), including 6 songs held out of the earlier runs. Every cut in that check was inside the length tolerance.
- Those ratings are automated. They are not human listeners, and they were not run on real competitive programs.
Plain limits
- Not an app, not a store listing, and not something with a price.
- L8A is not affiliated with USFS.
