The Loose Leaf Reader app

No tracking, no account, no ads

  • No account to install or read.
  • No ads in the app.
  • No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting. Nothing in the app contacts a developer server, analytics service, or crash reporter on our behalf.
  • Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We do not run our own license server.

Your library

Books you import, reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, shelves, and backups are stored on your Mac or iPhone unless you turn on optional iCloud sync.

A random local device ID (not a hardware or advertising identifier) may be created on the device so reading-position files can be named per device. It is not sent to us. If you enable iCloud sync, that ID lives inside your synced library folder and is stored only with the rest of your iCloud library.

When the app uses the network

Network use is user-initiated or off by default.

Optional iCloud sync is off until you turn it on. When enabled, books, metadata, covers, highlights (including excerpt text), and reading positions sync into your iCloud container for Loose Leaf Reader, under your Apple ID. Sync is handled by Apple, subject to Apple's privacy practices. This is not data we collect. Turning sync off copies the library back locally; the iCloud copy may remain until you remove it.

If you paste a link to a PDF, the app fetches that URL directly on the device. Nothing goes to L8A. Cookies from those downloads can persist per host in the system cookie jar and may be sent on a later download to the same host. The host is the one in the URL you paste, not one we choose.

looseleaf:// links open a book or a spot in Loose Leaf. On Mac and iPhone, the app handles those links on the device. Nothing goes to L8A.

There is no automatic update phone-home outside Apple's App Store update mechanism. Third-party updaters are not used.

What we do not collect

We do not collect: names, email addresses, contacts, location, browsing history, device advertising identifiers, purchase history beyond what Apple shows us as the developer of record, analytics events, or crash dumps.

This website

The marketing site at l8a.dev/loose-leaf is separate from the app.

  • No account is required to read these pages, and there is no waitlist form.
  • Hosting logs, such as IP address, browser, and referrer, may be recorded by the host for operations and abuse prevention. We do not use them for advertising profiles.
  • No third-party ad or analytics pixels are on these pages.

Children's privacy
